Top 25 Albums of 2006

2006 Was a year of change, and a year of slightly less music consumption…even if my appetite for new sounds remained as voracious as ever. Relocating 2000 miles west to the lovely Eagle, Colorado brought with it a much-welcomed change of lifestyle, however music took a back seat to other experiences, for much of the year. A void developed once I left my job in Chicago, a job that provided a venue for listening music all day, every day. This void was filled with sounds of a different kind…the sound of a fall breeze rustling the aspens, the smooth efficient sound of peddling along the Colorado River, or the sound of swishing and scraping as Beth and I carve down the slopes. The oddest new sound remains the 200 head of cattle ‘mooing’ the time I rode up Brush Creek Road. From a distance it sounded like the rumbling of a foreboding train, roaring down the tracks, or what I image Sunn O))) sounds like live.

I did spend time with plenty of new music this year, a year that produced some amazing albums. My album of the year is Liars’ Drums Not Dead. I suspected this would be my top album as soon as it came out in January, and sure enough, through the rest of the 2006, no other album matched its power. Drums Not Dead is a remarkable listening experience. Liars’ sound is deceptively simple, seeming composed of a few basic elements, elements that are at times loud and driving, mellow and tender, or unique and weird. The album offers a wide range of experience - fun to listen to yet incredibly intriguing. TV On The Radio’s Return To Cookie Mountain came quite close to matching the originality and intrigue of Drums Not Dead. Return To Cookie Mountain is a marvel of an album, an amazing listen…as was Sonic Youth’s so called ‘pop’ album, Rather Ripped. Hearing Sonic Youth harness their far out and experimental sound into condensed, well crafted songs produced amazing results. Rather Ripped will likely remain my favorite Sonic Youth album ever. The album that grew the most on me this year was Bonnie "Prince" Billy, The Letting Go. I’ve always liked Will Oldham, but with this album I love Will Oldham. Never has he sounded so tender and heartbreaking. The untitled song at the end of the album, the one that isn’t listed, might be the most beautiful love song I’ve heard. Rounding out my top five is Charalambides A Vintage Burden. I’ve been a big fan of the so-called ‘New Weird Folk’ movement that has been going on the past 4 years. There are quite a few acts making music that fit into this genre. With A Vintage Burden, Charalambides have proved to be in a ‘folk’ world all their own, one filled with captivating and beautiful drawn out wonders.
